CHAPTER 3 & 4 ; GETTING TO KNOW CAMPUS & MEMORY , IMPROVING CONCENTRITION AND READING SYSTEM

LET KNOW OUR CAMPUS!

MARA University of  Technology Pahang Campus , Jengka , Pahang

I will share about the facilities , the resources , the buildings and so on . In my campus UiTM Jengka , section has been divided by 3 resources .

3 TYPE OF RESOURCES

AL-BUKHARI LIBRARY :

In 1985, Pahang Darul Makmur was based in Teluk Sisek, Kuantan, and relocated to its permanent campus in Bandar Jengka, Pahang, in 1993. In that year, as Al-Bukhari Library, the name of the library began to shape. At the opening of the library in 1985, the compilation of the UITM Pahang library only needed 4 staff and was led by En. Wan Shuib Wan Bain | In addition to the establishment of UiTM, now the Al-Bukhari Library, the UiTM Pahang Branch has a total of 27 employees headed by Mrs. Rosnita Ja'afar, Deputy Chief Librarian.

  • Al Bukhari 1 is next to the HEA building.
  • The second one behind Al Bukhari 1 is 'Al Bukhari 2.'The Al-Bukhari library is open from Monday to Friday (8.30 am to 6.30 pm) and from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm on Saturday.
  • The public holiday is Sunday.
  • The UiTM library uses the LCC system (Library Of Congress).
  • To find the books that they like, students can search the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).

HEA BUILDING :

Hal Ehwal Akademik (HEA) it for all student to ask about their academic . To help student solve the problem of study plan package

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & COMPUTING :

Computer Lab for all .

INFRASCIENCE TECH :

CAFE & FOOD COURT :

BUSES & VAN SERVICE :

HEP BUILDING :

SPORT COURTS :

DATARAN INTEGRITI:

MEMORY , IMPROVING CONCENTRITION & READING SYSTEM

MEMORY LEARNING & IMPROVING !

As a student we need to improve our concentration and memory we need a strategy. So here is the strategy .

What is memory?

  • The accumulation of knowledge over time (Santrock, 2011) or the mind stores and recall information (mental processes/cognition), like computer software.

What is brain ?

  • The brain is the organ , like computer hardware

MEMORY STRATEGIES

  • Memory strategies will help students in their encoding, storing, and retrieving the information(helps to remember and recall).

3 TYPES OF MEMORY
1) Sensory memory
Numerous incoming information form 5 sense will be stored in sensory memory for an instant.
2) Short-term memory
Our short term memory have only limited storage. The information must be repeated in order to get information to long-term memory.
3) Long-term memory
Our long term memory is unlimited and have large storage. If the information is not being used for long term time, the information will be lost.

WAY TO IMPROVE MEMORY STRATEGIES.

  • Massed practice vs spaced practice
  • Break reading material down
  • Rehearsal
  • Elaboration strategies

THE REASON HOW FORGETTING COULD OCCUR

  • Did not pay attention to the information
  • Did not understand the information
  • Cramming ( last minute study)
  • Did not have good strategies
  • Interference ( having 2 exams on the same day especially if the subject if the subjects are closely related for example psychology & counselling )
  • Test anxiety ( negative thoughts about oneself , did not prepare well for the test )

STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE CONCENTRATION

  • CONCENTRATION – focusing your attention on what you are doing.
Causes of poor concentration
  • Lack of attention
  •  Lack of interest
  •  Lack of motivation
  •  Distraction from others
  •  Uncomfortable environment
  •  Physiological matters – illness, tiredness
  •  Psychological matters – personal problems, worries, anxieties
1. Use motivational and organizational strategies – create interest in the work, develop a positive attitude toward you work, use goal setting strategies, use time-management strategies
2. Create a positive learning environment – find a better location, reduce multitasking,
minimize distractions
3. Deal with internal distractions – deal with personal problems, deal with competing
activities,
4. Use active learning strategies (as discussed in improving memory)
5. Match your learning style to the task
6. Monitor your concentration

ACTIVITY

  • Which of the strategy that you prefer?

Acronim & Rehearsal
  • Elaborate why you choose the strategy.

Since high school, I've been using this acronim technique. I can very well recall something by using this form. I just write the word down, and I still read it. Those forms still work for me. Then , rehearsal I will practice and repeat as much as possible until I remember something. My brain is not like a wise person like to remember something at a glance or just read it once. That is why I took this step to remember something more easily.

  • Give an example on these question:

    • What strategy do you use to remember the colours of the rainbow?

Acrostic & elobration strategies
    • What strategy do you use to remember the names of our planet?

Acrostic & elobration strategies

READING / STUDY SYSTEM

  • Reading academic materials are different from general reading tasks (story books, newspaper). Using a study system can help in comprehending reading academic materials due to three factors:
       1. active learning strategies
       2. use of multisensory methods (eyes, ears, mouth, hands – refer to the learning pyramid)
       3. immediate steps for self-testing and review

  • As a study strategy, SQ3R helps students “get it” the first time they read a text by teaching students how to read and think like an effective reader.
This strategy includes the following five steps (Robinson, 1946 in Adolescence Literacy):
 1. Survey
Review the text to gain initial meaning from the title, subtitle, chapter introduction or lead-in, boldfaced headings, graphs, charts, pictures, the final paragraph or summary and end-of-chapter material (study / discussion questions, vocabulary list).
2. Question
Try to form questions based on the preview (survey).
3. Read
As you read, look for answers to the questions you formed during your preview of the text. These questions, based on the structure of the text, help focus your reading.
4. Recite
After each section, pause. Attempt to answer questions formed earlier. If you could not answer, then look back and find the answer in the section. You should recite and rehearse the answers to your questions. Summarize the information. Move through the text you should recite or rehearse the answers to your questions and make notes about your answer for later studying.
5. Review
After you have finished reading the whole reading assignment, refer back to each heading. Recall your questions and try to answer the them. If you cannot recall, go back and find the answer. This part is to test yourself.
